This is a question that came to me recently and because it’s not an uncommon concern, I thought I’d address it here.

The concern is not really so much about WHETHER he has a female friend, but how that friendship is acted upon. If he’s seeing her for meals and such, that’s too much like a date. If they go out for drinks, that’s a bit dangerous because alcohol makes most people more amorous and at the same time, loosens their ability to control their behavior. If he’s spending that kind of time with a female friend, out of respect for you and his relationship, you should be included. If he’s unwilling to do so, that’s a great big red flag.

If they text and talk once in a while, that’s a different situation, especially if he keeps you included in what was said. It also depends on how long they’ve been friends. If she becomes a friend AFTER he met you, that’s always something to watch out for. If she’s a long time friend, then that needs to be respected.
